X-Men ’97 has always faced an unusual casting challenge. The series is not simply another animated adaptation of Marvel’s mutants. It is a direct continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, meaning many viewers arrived with voices they had associated with these characters for more than 30 years.
The solution has been a mixture of returning performers and actors taking responsibility for characters with substantial histories behind them. Recent interviews with Adrian Hough, Jennifer Hale and A.J. LoCascio show just how different those experiences can be. Hough returned to a role he first performed in the 1990s, Hale brought years of previous experience with Jean Grey into a continuation of another actor’s performance, and LoCascio inherited one of the original show’s most recognizable voices with Gambit.
Together, their experiences reveal one of the more interesting aspects of X-Men ’97: preserving the vocal identity of the original series without requiring every performance to remain frozen in 1990s animation.
Adrian Hough Kept Nightcrawler’s Voice for More Than 30 Years
Adrian Hough occupies a particularly unusual place in the cast because he already knew exactly how his version of Nightcrawler sounded.
Hough originally voiced Kurt Wagner in X-Men: The Animated Series, appearing in the memorable “Nightcrawler” episode and returning later in the original show’s run. More than three decades later, X-Men ’97 brought him back to the character, eventually giving Nightcrawler a much larger place within the team.
In an August interview with Muses of Media, Hough revealed that returning was not as simple as receiving a call because he had played the character before. Members of the original cast had to audition again, allowing the production to determine whether they could still deliver the performances after so much time had passed. Hough succeeded, but he had also spent those intervening years maintaining the voice. He described Nightcrawler as a voice he had kept “in my back pocket.”
What changed was the material around it.
Hough described the original Nightcrawler as soulful, while X-Men ’97 has allowed him to explore more sides of Kurt. Season 2 has given the character opportunities to joke with Beast and Professor Xavier, participate more fully with the team and move between playful interactions and serious dramatic material.
That expansion means returning to the original voice was only the starting point. Hough also credited voice director Meredith Layne with helping align his instincts with what the production needed, particularly because the actors record before the animation is completed.
Hough has even taken on another mutant in Season 2, voicing Strong Guy with a deliberately different vocal approach. His experience demonstrates that X-Men ’97 is not asking its returning performers merely to reproduce old recordings. They are being asked to take voices established decades ago and make them work within new stories.
Jennifer Hale Approaches Jean Grey as a Character She Already Knows
Jennifer Hale’s path to X-Men ’97 is almost the reverse of Hough’s.
Jean Grey was voiced by Catherine Disher in the original animated series, but Hale was hardly unfamiliar with the character when she joined X-Men ’97. She had previously voiced Jean in other Marvel projects, including Wolverine and the X-Men and several video games.
In a recent Digital Trends interview, Hale described playing Jean in X-Men ’97 as feeling like she had won the “Golden Ticket.” She also discussed the character’s evolution during Season 2, which arrived after a first season that placed Jean through an unusually complicated emotional journey involving Madelyne Pryor, her relationship with Scott Summers and the future of her family.
Hale’s casting illustrates an important distinction in the way X-Men ’97 handles legacy voices. Continuity does not always mean retaining the same actor. It can also mean finding a performer who understands the established character while bringing experience from other versions of that role.
Jean is particularly suited to that approach because Hale has already encountered her in different interpretations. Each production has its own writing, tone and continuity, but the fundamental character remains familiar territory.
Hale’s enormous background in games and animation also means she approaches Jean with decades of experience in performances where an actor often records without the physical sets, costumes or scene partners available in live action. That becomes especially relevant on X-Men ’97, where the vocal performance must help establish the emotional foundation that animators subsequently build upon.
The result isn’t intended to be an imitation of Disher’s Jean. It is another performance within a character history that now stretches across generations of Marvel animation.
A.J. LoCascio Had a Different Gambit Legacy to Inherit
Few X-Men: The Animated Series voices were as immediately identifiable as Chris Potter’s Gambit. That left A.J. LoCascio with a difficult task when he became Remy LeBeau for X-Men ’97.
LoCascio was not taking over an obscure supporting character. He was stepping into a role whose Cajun accent, attitude and relationship with Rogue had been established over five seasons of the original series.
The production ultimately found an elegant way to preserve both performers within the revival. LoCascio became Gambit, while Potter returned to the X-Men universe as Cable.
LoCascio discussed inheriting the role and his wider voice acting career during an August 13 appearance on The Brandon Davis Show, following the Season 2 finale. His career already included work across franchises such as Back to the Future, Star Wars and Gremlins, but Gambit placed him in the unusual position of succeeding a performance remembered closely by the show’s original audience.
The reaction to his Gambit also demonstrates how quickly a successor can develop an identity of his own. Rather than simply being treated as the actor replacing Potter, LoCascio has increasingly become associated with this era of the character.
Lenore Zann, who returned as Rogue, has previously spoken positively about that transition. Although her original recording relationship was with Potter, she has said that LoCascio has taken the torch and run with it. The situation creates an unusual vocal bridge between the two series: Rogue retains her original performer while the Gambit opposite her belongs to a new generation.
Season 2 has given LoCascio further room to define that interpretation, making Gambit’s voice part of X-Men ’97 rather than merely an attempt to recreate what came before.
X-Men ’97 Balances Recognition With Reinvention
Hough, Hale and LoCascio represent three very different solutions to the same fundamental problem.
With Nightcrawler, Marvel was able to bring back the original performer more than 30 years later. Hough retained the recognizable foundation of Kurt’s voice while the new writing allowed him to expand the character.
With Jean Grey, the series turned to a veteran actor who had already played Jean elsewhere. Hale therefore entered the revival without being the voice from the original show, but with considerable experience understanding the character.
Gambit required another approach. LoCascio inherited both the character and the expectations attached to Potter’s performance, then had to make Remy his own while acting opposite performers returning from the original production.
Those differences are part of what makes the voice casting of X-Men ’97 more interesting than simply assembling as much of the old cast as possible.
The series has retained performers including Lenore Zann, Cal Dodd, George Buza and Alison Sealy-Smith, while other major characters are now voiced by actors such as Ray Chase, Holly Chou and Isaac Robinson-Smith. Even Potter’s move from Gambit to Cable demonstrates that returning talent does not necessarily have to return in exactly the same capacity.
The goal is ultimately recognition without confinement. X-Men ’97 needs to sound enough like the series audiences remember to function as its continuation, while giving its performers enough freedom to serve stories being written decades later.
Recent comments from the cast suggest that process happens differently for every actor. Some have carried a voice with them for more than 30 years. Some arrive with experience playing another incarnation of the same Marvel character. Others inherit roles that once belonged to performers they admired.
What connects them is the challenge of making X-Men ’97 feel familiar without turning its voice cast into an exercise in imitation. Two seasons into the revival, its performers are increasingly demonstrating that honoring the sound of the original series and finding something new within these characters do not have to be opposing goals.
